Smoke under the door, a smell of burning, heat on the door, a smoke alarm going off, a smell of gas. If any of these applies, it is a case for 112. Do not touch a hot door and do not open it.

If you smell smoke or gas in the stairwell, warn your neighbours without using doorbells or light switches. Leave the building and call 112 from outside.

Ask the neighbours whether they can smell or hear anything. They are often closer to the kitchen than you are in the stairwell. A spare key with a neighbour is the quickest solution here.

A smoke alarm in the kitchen and hallway warns neighbours. A spare key with neighbours saves time in an emergency. Some cookers have an automatic switch-off.

In Baden-Württemberg, smoke alarms are required by law in bedrooms, children’s rooms and hallways. A cooker with automatic shut-off or a cooker safety device helps as well.
