A security cylinder usually has drill protection made of hardened material, protection against snapping or pulling, and keys that can only be copied with a security card. Which level your door needs depends on whether it can be reached directly from the street, whether a security door plate is fitted and what the lock looks like.

The best cylinder is of little use if it sticks out a long way and can be gripped with pliers. A security door plate covers the cylinder on the outside. That is why we measure precisely and choose the right length. If a new door plate makes sense, we tell you the price in advance.

Measure, choose the right security cylinder, pull out the old cylinder, fit the new one, test the lock several times. You receive the keys and the security card.

Drill protection: hardened pins in the cylinder. Pull protection: makes it harder to pull the cylinder out with tools. Snap protection: the cylinder breaks at one point without freeing the lock. Copy protection: keys only with the security card. The manufacturer’s documents tell you which features your cylinder has.

As a tenant, you can usually have a better cylinder fitted, as long as you keep the old one and have it put back when you move out. With a master key system, ask the landlord. Some home contents insurers ask how your door is secured; proof of fitting is helpful then.

Some cylinders can be locked from outside even when a key is in the lock on the inside. This is useful if older people or children are in the flat and someone needs to get in during an emergency. A security cylinder can be ordered keyed alike. Then one key opens, for example, the front door and the side entrance. That means fewer keys on your key ring. Keyed-alike cylinders usually have to be ordered; we tell you the price and delivery time beforehand.

For many security cylinders, you can only get extra keys from a specialist dealer or the manufacturer, on presentation of the security card. This often takes a few days. So plan how many keys you need right when the cylinder is fitted.

A security cylinder protects the cylinder, not the whole door. If the door leaf is thin, the frame weak or the strike plate only screwed on with short screws, that is where a burglar is more likely to attack. Then a strike plate, a door plate or a better door helps more than a more expensive cylinder. We tell you this honestly.

The front door of the building is usually part of the building’s master key system. Only the owner can order a security cylinder there, because all residents would need new keys. For your flat door, you decide yourself, after checking with the owner if it is part of the system.

The flat door is not the only way in. Garages with a door into the house, basement doors and garden doors are often forgotten. If you fit a security cylinder there, you can order it keyed alike with the front door. Then one key is enough for all the doors.

If you already have a good cylinder that sits flush and locks easily, a swap is often not needed. We tell you honestly on the phone whether the extra cost is worth it, rather than selling you something you do not need. Sometimes a security door plate is the better investment.
