A security door plate with a cylinder cover protects the cylinder from the outside. The cylinder should sit flush with it. Without a security door plate, a cylinder that barely sticks out is the next best solution.

As a tenant, you can usually have a better cylinder fitted, as long as you keep the old one and have it put back when you move out. With a master key system, ask the landlord. Some home contents insurers ask how your door is secured; proof of fitting is helpful then.

Buying an expensive cylinder that then sticks out a few millimetres. A security cylinder without a security door plate on an exposed door. Keeping the security card on the key ring.

Keep the security card in a safe place. Only have extra keys cut with the card. Keep the invoice in case your insurer asks for it.
