What opening with a new cylinder means technically

Address or name tag on the lost keys

Many people attach a name tag, an address or a promotional key fob with a house number to their bunch of keys. If a bunch like that gets lost, in the worst case the finder knows exactly which door the key fits. A key carried in a bag together with a letter or a parcel slip can also give your address away. In cases like these, a new cylinder is the safest answer. If there is no clue at all to your address, the situation is more relaxed, and you can weigh things up calmly.

Lost on the bus or the train

If your keys slip out of your bag on the way to work, they have usually stayed in the vehicle or at the stop. Report the loss to the lost property office of the transport operator and of your town or municipality. But do not count on them turning up again. You can have the door opened and the cylinder changed straight away. If the old key turns up later, you still have not done anything wrong.

Standard or security cylinder: help with the decision

Ask yourself three things. How easy is it to reach the door from the street? Do you live on the ground floor, or in a building where many strangers pass through the stairwell? And how important is it to you to have a key that cannot simply be copied? If you tend to answer yes to these questions, you will often choose a security cylinder, which typically costs 25–70 € more. Otherwise a standard cylinder for typically 25–50 € is usually enough.

A work key on the same bunch

If a key from your employer was also on the lost bunch, please tell them on the same day. If that key belongs to a master key system, it is a separate case. There is no list price for it; instead there is a fixed price that we tell you on the phone beforehand. Usually the employer or the property management decides what happens there. Regardless of that, you can already secure the door to your own flat now.

Inform your landlord and the property management

In a rented flat, the cylinder often belongs to the flat. Let your landlord know that the key was lost and that you are having the cylinder changed. Agree with them whether you should keep the old cylinder. If your flat key also fits the front door of the building or the basement, the loss affects several doors. The property management should know about this so that it can decide for itself what to do. It is best to put this agreement in writing.

Plan your day around the appointment

Opening the door and changing the cylinder take longer than a door opening alone. So allow a little extra time before you head back to work or pick up a child. Have your ID card or passport ready if you have it with you. Also think about who else will need a key this evening. Perhaps your partner can collect the new key from you straight away, rather than standing outside the door in the evening.

Think about the letterbox and the basement too

A lost bunch rarely holds just the flat key. Often there are also keys for the letterbox, the basement storage room, the bicycle room or the garden gate. Go through these keys one by one in your head. A letterbox lock does not have a list price. We tell you the fixed price for it on the phone beforehand. If the basement or the front door of the building is part of a system in the house, the property management is responsible. Write the list down before you call us.

What does an opening with a new cylinder cost during the day?

Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, opening a locked door with fitting on the same visit costs 178 €. The material for the cylinder is added to that.

Will my insurance pay for the new cylinder?

We cannot judge that. Please ask your insurance company. For your claim, you will receive an invoice from us that lists every item separately.

My old key has turned up again. Was the change a waste?

No. You do not know whether someone had the key in the meantime or had it copied. With the new cylinder, you are on the safe side.
