What opening with a new cylinder means technically

Handbag stolen with the keys inside

If your bag is stolen at night, your keys, ID card and bank cards are often all missing at once. Block your cards immediately on 116 116. Report the theft to the police. Thanks to your ID card, the thief may know your address and also has the matching key. This is exactly the situation in which it makes sense to have the door opened and the cylinder changed on the very same night.

Why many people do not wait until the morning

In theory, you could sleep at a friend’s place and deal with the change the next day. But many people do not want their home to be accessible all night long with a key in a stranger’s hands. Pets, medication or the baby’s cot are often inside as well. Weigh up calmly what matters more to you. We tell you the price on the phone beforehand, and you decide without any pressure at all.

Waiting with children in the car or at the neighbours’

If you are out with tired children, do not leave them standing in a cold stairwell. Stay with them in the warm car, or ask a neighbour whether the children may wait at their place. Agree who stays with the children and who meets us at the door. Once the door is open, the children can already go to bed while the cylinder is being changed.

Keep the new keys without an address

Once you have the new keys in your hand, do not make the same mistake as before. Do not attach an address or a name tag to the bunch. Count the keys that same night, and put the security card, if there is one, in a fixed place in the flat, separate from the keys. Over the next few days, give a spare key to someone you trust, for example your parents or a good neighbour.

Who to inform the next day

On the morning after the change, the old keys no longer fit for anyone. Think of everyone who had one: your partner, children, parents, neighbours with a spare key, perhaps a cleaner. In a rented flat, also inform your landlord or the property management. If the stolen bunch also held a key for the front door of the building or the basement, the management really must know about it. It will then decide for itself on any further steps.

When the door had to be damaged at night

Sometimes a locked door cannot be opened without damage. In that case we ask you whether we may drill and explain briefly why. If you say yes, the old cylinder is almost always ruined afterwards, and the new one is fitted straight away. So you do not have to spend the night with a door that no longer locks. Without your consent, we do not drill, not even at three o’clock in the morning.

Staying calm despite the shock

A theft at night knocks many people off balance. Take it step by step: first get to a safe place, then block your cards, then call the police, then deal with the door. Write down on a piece of paper or on your phone everything that was in the bag. This helps later with the police report and with any questions to your insurance company. For the door itself, you do not need to prepare anything except being there.

What does the package cost at night?

Outside Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm, opening a locked door with fitting on the same visit costs 228 €. The material for the new cylinder is added to that.
