Reasons for a new cylinder even though the door only slammed shut

When a door has slammed shut, the key is usually inside the flat. So why a new cylinder? Common reasons: the old key has been sticking for months, a former flatmate never gave their key back, or a spare key went missing a while ago. Since someone is at the door anyway, many people get this done at the same time. You then save yourself a second appointment and a second call-out.

The length is measured right at your door

A cylinder has to fit the door exactly. On the outside it may only stick out a little beyond the door plate, and on the inside it must not be too short. That is why the length is measured on site, separately for each side. You do not need to remove anything or buy anything at a DIY store. Please also do not buy a cylinder yourself in advance on the off chance. If the length is wrong, the door ends up in a worse state than before.

How many keys do you really need?

Before the appointment, count who needs a key. Every person in the household, plus perhaps a carer or a family member who waters the plants. Plan for a spare key that you leave with someone you trust, not under the doormat. If you need more keys than usual, please tell us beforehand. Extra keys can make the material more expensive; we will clarify this on the phone.

Choosing a standard or security cylinder during the day

During the day, you usually have more time to choose. As material, a standard cylinder typically costs 25–50 €. A security cylinder typically costs 25–70 € more. It offers, for example, more protection against certain kinds of attack. For a flat door in a quiet block of flats, the standard version is enough for many people. For a front door right on the street, some prefer more protection. We are happy to explain the differences on site.

A key list for the household

After the change, all the old keys are worthless. Write down who gets which new key. Note the date and, if there is one, the number on the security card. Keep this card separate from the keys. If someone moves out later or a key goes missing, you will know straight away how many are in circulation. This little list saves a lot of guesswork later on.

When a tradesperson or guest is still expected

If someone else is coming on the same day, for example the electrician or your mother-in-law, plan the change so that you can hand out the new keys in time. Otherwise, guests with an old key will find themselves in front of a locked door. Give these people a quick call and let them know. For tradespeople, it is better to hand over the new key in person rather than hide it somewhere.

Looking after the new cylinder properly

A new cylinder does not need to be treated with oil from the workshop. Always insert the key fully before you turn it. Do not let a heavy bunch with lots of fobs hang from the key while it is in the lock. The weight puts strain on the cylinder every time the door is opened. If the door only locks when you push it, the cause is often the latch or the frame, not the cylinder. If so, tell us at the appointment.

Can I decide once the door is already open?

Yes. You can decide after the opening whether you want a new cylinder. A short mention when you call is helpful, though, as it makes planning easier.

Do I need to ask anyone if I rent my flat?

That is generally a good idea. Check with your landlord whether you may change the cylinder and what should happen to the old cylinder when you move out.
