From drill ground to residential district
Grünbühl did not start as housing. Around 1830 King Wilhelm I laid out a large drill ground for the Ludwigsburg garrison. From 1935 a military barracks camp stood there; in World War II it was used as a POW camp. After the war the US first used it as an internment site. From 1947 the barracks became civilian. Displaced persons, refugees and later people from many regions found a new home. Within a few years the former military site turned into a residential settlement – compact, practical, full of new neighbours.
Arriving and living together
In the early post-war decades displaced families shaped the place. In the 1960s more people from Württemberg arrived; later Grünbühl grew into a diverse neighbourhood through migration from many countries. Churches and clubs tell the same story: the Martins congregation began in the late 1940s as an ecumenical community because many newcomers were Catholic. Protestants and Catholics first shared a barrack church – before Martinskirche and St. Elisabeth had their own buildings.
Schools, meeting places, Grünbühl and Sonnenberg
As the settlement grew, Eichendorffschule, kindergartens, churches, sports clubs and neighbourhood hubs followed. The community and youth centre opened in 2002; in 2013 the Mehrgenerationenhaus became a social hub for families, teens and older residents (today with the family centre and Jugendcafé on Weichselstraße). Grünbühl and Sonnenberg long sat side by side. Sonnenberg once held US Army housing; many of those buildings were later demolished and replaced. On 1 January 2013 both areas became the district Grünbühl-Sonnenberg – Ludwigsburg’s smallest district on the Langes Feld.
Change until today
Since 2006 the “Soziale Stadt Grünbühl-Sonnenberg/Karlshöhe” programme has upgraded housing, meeting places, open space and links between Grünbühl and Sonnenberg. Many people live in apartment and terraced houses – including stock of Wohnungsbau Ludwigsburg. Everyday life: AWO Kinderhaus Wundertütentage (Pregelstraße), bus stop Netzestraße, bakery Anders, Grünbühl Kebap, Grünbühl-Stüble, Aldi on Aldinger Straße, REWE on Wilhelmstraße. Evenings at the TSV clubhouse with Grün & Gusto (since 2026), playground and football pitch at Oßweiler Weg, TSV and THW.
Grünbühl: setting and character
Grünbühl-Sonnenberg sits a little above the city core and still feels like its own quarter despite the proximity. Apartment buildings, terraced houses, Netzestraße, daycare centres and clubs shape the picture. It is a district for living and settling in: fewer shopfronts, more neighbourhood.

In the evening, when shutters go down, you notice the rhythm of families and working people. Grünbühl has no grand historic backdrop like the Baroque centre — instead a clear, everyday character: dense, green, lively in the small details.
