Report the theft to the police. Have your cards blocked (blocking hotline 116 116). Check whether your address or ID card was with the key. Then have the cylinder changed, ideally the same day.

A key plus an ID card or a letter with your address is the critical case. Then someone can find the matching door. A key without an address, for example from the gym, is less urgent, but even then a change makes sense if you are not sure.

Home contents insurance sometimes pays for the cylinder change after a theft, depending on your policy. In rented flats with a master key system, you must tell your landlord, because the whole system may be affected. We tell you the price for a master key system first.

If you can’t get in: Opening plus a new cylinder on the same call-out: slammed shut 148 € / 198 €, locked 178 € / 228 €; cylinder material typically 25–50 € (standard). If you can still get in: cylinder change 89 € or 119 €, standard cylinder included.

If needed, we first open the door without damage. Then we fit the new cylinder and you test the new keys. After that, the stolen key is useless for this door.

Write down which keys were on the key ring. The flat door and the front door matter most. The garage, letterbox and cellar come next. For every door with a cylinder we quote a fixed price. With a master key system, the owner decides about the whole system.

If the master key system cannot be changed straight away, a separate cylinder in the flat door is a temporary solution, if the landlord agrees. Keep the old cylinder.

Report the theft to the police. You need the confirmation for your insurance and your bank. Whether your home contents insurance pays for the cylinder change depends on your policy. With a master key system, tell the landlord, because the whole building may be affected.

If the cylinder cannot be changed straight away, also lock from the inside with a bolt or chain, if you have one. Do not leave your key in the lock on the inside if your cylinder has no emergency function, so that someone can get in during an emergency. Change the cylinder as soon as possible.

Tell everyone who lives in the flat that the key was stolen. Anyone with their own key gets a new one after the change. Do not forget people who have a spare key, such as neighbours or family.

If your car was stolen with your house key inside, the thief often also knows your address from the vehicle papers. Then a quick cylinder change matters even more. Report both to the police.

Carry your keys and ID separately, keep your bag at the front in crowds, and never put your address on your key ring. This lowers the risk that a thief who has your key also finds the right door.

If you still have a second key, you could easily have copies made from it. But that does not solve the problem, because the stolen key still fits. Only a new cylinder makes it useless.

When and where was it stolen? What was in the bag: keys, ID, cards, mobile? Are there witnesses or video recordings? Note down the case reference number. You need it for your bank, your insurer and new ID documents.

If the stolen key opens several doors, such as your flat and garage, we change the cylinders in one appointment. We tell you the price for each door beforehand. Keyed-alike cylinders usually have to be ordered; until they arrive, a single new cylinder can secure your flat door.

If you get the key back through the police or a lost property office, you do not know whether someone has made a copy. If the cylinder has already been changed, that is no longer a problem.

Waiting to see if the key turns up again. Blocking only your bank cards and forgetting the lock. Leaving the spare key with neighbours with a name tag on it.

Carry your new keys without an address. Apply for new bank cards and a new ID card. File the invoice and the police report together.
