Emergency locksmith for a lost key

Ask whether anyone has a spare key, such as family or your landlord. If not, give us a call. Tell us whether the door just fell shut or whether it was locked.

Many keys turn up again: in a jacket, in the car, at a neighbour’s. If you are not locked out, a quick look first makes sense. If you are outside and nobody has a spare, waiting rarely pays off, especially at night or in the cold.

If the key was together with a letter, an ID card or an address tag, the cylinder should be changed. This can be done on the same call-out as the opening. That way you get back in and the lost key is useless.

We check the door and lock, open it without damage and check with you that you live there. Then you decide whether the cylinder should be changed.

The latch is the slanted bolt that clicks into place when you pull the door shut. The bolt only comes out when you lock the door. We usually open doors that have slammed shut via the latch, without touching the cylinder. With locked doors we work on the cylinder. That is why we ask about it on the phone.

We open the door so that the door, frame and cylinder stay intact. This works with most standard doors. Only with special cylinders or damaged locks may drilling be necessary; we tell you in advance, with the price, and you decide.

We only open the door if you live there or are authorised. Show your ID card or passport or, after opening, post with your address from inside the flat. This protects you from someone else having your door opened.

Keys often get lost during sport, on the bus, while shopping or while playing with children in the park. Retrace your steps in your head and ask briefly at those places. Many shops and clubs collect lost property.

If you are locked out with small children or a dog, tell us on the phone. Wait somewhere warm and safe, for example at a neighbour’s or in a café nearby, and keep your mobile switched on.

If the key turns up after the door has been opened, all is well as long as no cylinder was changed. If it was changed, the old key no longer fits. Do not keep it, to avoid mix-ups.

If the key is inside the flat, opening the door is enough: 99 € or 129 € during the day Mon–Fri, otherwise 149 € or 179 €. If it really is lost and had an address on it, opening plus a new cylinder makes sense: 148 € / 198 € or 178 € / 228 €, plus material. We work out which applies on the phone.

Check whether the key is in the flat after all. Then have a spare key cut from your second key straight away and give it to someone you trust.

School-age children with their own key lose it more often. A lanyard on the school bag and a fixed place at home help. For emergencies, a key can be kept with neighbours the child knows.

If only the flat door is shut, wait in the stairwell. If the front door of the building is shut too, ring a neighbour’s bell. Tell us whether we need to open two doors, so that the price is right from the start.

Find your second key and carry it from now on. Have a new spare key cut. If your address was on the lost key: change the cylinder.
